Thursday the weather turned much nicer than expected. I walked all around the town which wasn't all that large. Even found a Synagogue among all those churches.
I found Les Halles which was the central market. They even had a little stand that sold oysters and which had seats and tables. It was only 10:30 AM. There were people there eating oysters and drinking wine, but it was too early for me. He said he closed at 1:00PM. So much for oysters for me there.I went to the Palais Des Papes. Bought a ticket for the Palais and for the Pont d'Avignon which is only partly still there. Decided to visit the bridge, then eat lunch and then go to the Palais. That worked out well.
The bridge was interesting but what was more interesting is the exhibition of bridges of different types around the world which included the Brooklyn and the Golden Gate bridges. The oldest bridges constructed like the Pont d'Avignon are le Pont Neuf and another one in Paris which slips my mind at the moment. The Papacy was in Avignon for about a century. The political climate in Rome was too dangerous. So that was an interesting visit. The view from there was quite good as it seems important places are always built on high spots mainly for security purposes. It was the same in ancient civilizations that I saw in Turkey. Of course the height didn't deter the modern world from pillaging the sites. [Continued in next post.]
